HADESTOWN REVIEW: BEST SHOW IN TOWN
Wow, what a surprise! Hadestown is sweepingly beautiful, up-to-date musical art of superior quality that should be at the top of your musical list the next time you visit London.
A classic story in modern packaging, with a super sassy hyper-musical genre blend of bold, rich, funky pulse that makes this musical swing like hell.
Hadestown is based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, which is also depicted in Offenbach’s upright Orpheus in the Underworld, which has stunned audiences in Barrie Kosky’s wonderfully unabashed staging. A crowd-pleaser that can still be seen in Berlin.
This is the musical version of Anaïs Mitchell, which has set countless success records, won 8 Tony Awards and is said to have been seen by three million people on Broadway and in London’s West End, where it is now back. What a reunion!
Hadestown takes you on a journey to the underworld and back again, where two love stories intertwine in a wonderful retelling of the tale of dreamers Orpheus and Eurydice in love and their complicated encounter with King Hades and his wife Persephone. It sounds old-fashioned but appears to be the exact opposite.
The show bubbles with energy, humor, great dance numbers and great music with a beautiful and genuinely touching finish. You leave the theater with a charitable smile-through-tears feeling that stays with you long after.
Excellent soloists, cool costumes and a sharply cut staging make this show an unconditionally positive surprise, even when you’ve been ‘warned’ in advance ‘warned’ by the rave reviews.
A rare insistent and original folk/blues-inspired soundtrack drives the complex love story forward in a simple, post-apocalyptic stage design with the band as active players on stage.
Towering quality even on the smallest items makes Hadestown a must for music lovers.
My best recommendation and five stars from GOTTO SEE THIS.
