REVIEW THE ART OF THE FUGE: DESIGNER BALLET OF EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTIC CLASS

The Art of The Fuge is a sublime aesthetic experience in Alexei Ratmansky’s stunning choreography at the Old Stage. Fabulous set design and costumes by Moritz Junge/Jack Valentine against a backdrop of Bach’s almost entirely modernist, musically advanced work from 1736-1750, entertain with a rare ballet experience of international standard.

An elementally captivating, albeit actionless, full-length ballet, set in sharply designed stage images, where the dancers interpret Ukrainian Ratmansky’s choreography as a tribute to courage, hope and freedom.

Ratmansky is rooted in the classical ballet tradition – yet as the evening progresses, this performance reminds me more and more of the magnificent experiences of modern dance I have had with Marcos Morau and Christian Spuck in Berlin and Zurich. And which help to open up the world of ballet to a broader, modern audience. A dazzlingly beautiful lighting design by Brandon Stirling Baker completes the experience.

J.S. Bach’s Die Kunst der Fuge is an iconic, deeply refined musical work. It consists of a collection of fugues and canons, which are essentially constructed around the same theme, inspired by the notes B, A, C and H. The work is a treat for music historians and analysts, and in this staging it is divided into five differently orchestrated sections: solo piano, brass quintet, harpsichord solo, string trio and choir, with the final choral variation as the cathartic climax. We are on the high artistic edge here.

A quick glance at the reviews is enough to see that The Art Of The Fuge also fully satisfies the classical ballet audience, including Queen Margrethe, who attended the performance for the second time on “my evening”. The Art Of The Fuge runs until 18 November, and if you’re quick, you can still get tickets for this must-see designer ballet of the highest artistic calibre.
